Our school needs a home before the year ends.

Darrut Tarbiyah Muslim School has taught the children of Empangeni and Zululand since 2012. The masjid land we use is needed for the masjid's expansion. Without new premises by the end of 2026, DTMS may have to close.

Fourteen years of steady growth

DTMS began in 2012 in the maktab classrooms of Darul Quraan Empangeni. Today it is registered with the Department of Education as an independent school, and it remains the only Muslim school serving Empangeni, Richards Bay and the wider Zululand area.

Our curriculum is fully CAPS compliant, with Tarbiyah and Arabic built into every day. Classes are small, so every child is known by name.

  1. 2012 13 learners, 2 educators. Classes begin in borrowed maktab rooms.
  2. 2026 66 learners, Grade RR to 7. 10 permanent educators, 2 support staff and an admin and finance team.
  3. 2027 A permanent home. Room to grow, safer grounds, and courts for the whole community. With your help.

Why we must move

DTMS operates on Masjid Waqf land, and the masjid now needs that land to expand. We are grateful for every year we have had there. Now we need a place of our own.

  • A permanent home. Our own building means stability and the freedom to run the school without borrowed space.
  • A safer environment. Secure grounds and fencing for young children.
  • Easier to reach. A more central site that more families can get to.
  • Room to grow. Space for new learners strengthens the school's reputation and its finances.
  • Deen and academics together. A setting built around the school's vision from the ground up.
  • Courts for everyone. Padel and soccer courts that the public can use too.
  • Sadaqah Jaariyah. A school is a charity that keeps giving, for as long as children learn in it.

Small school, top achievers

DTMS learners have been chosen by the Islaah Foundation, in partnership with Star College Westville, for scholarships. Many are now at Star College, and they rank consistently in the top 10 there.

  • Top 10 at Empangeni High Former learners rank among the highest achievers at the local high school.
  • Reaching beyond the school Among our scholarship recipients are learners who reverted to Islam, a sign of the school's wider impact.

Courts for the whole community

The new site will include a padel court and a soccer field. Our learners will use them during the school day. After hours and on weekends, they will be open to the public.

There is nowhere like this for young people in the area. A safe place to play, next to a school and a masjid, is good for everyone in Empangeni.

Learning beyond the classroom

Our learners take part in drives and fundraisers every year. It builds compassion and a sense of duty to others.

  • Food and clothing drives, especially in Ramadan

  • Flood relief for KZN in 2022
  • Annual fundraisers for Palestine

School life also includes soccer, cricket and athletics, an annual sports day, the annual Jalsa and educational outings.
